Gautam Adani started Adani group. He was born into a Jain family in Ahemdabad, Gujarat, in 1962. Gautam Adani moved to Mumbai, Maharashtra, when he was 18 years old. He worked as a diamond sorter at Mahindra Brothers in the beginning of his career. He started his own diamond trading business in Mumbai after working as a diamond sorter for 2 years.
He made a profit of 10 lakh rupees in his first year of business at a diamond brokerage, which was large sum in the 1980s. Later, he began trading commodity and began purchasing PVC for his older brother’s plastic firm.
He founded Adani enterprises in 1988. It dealt in power and agricultural products. Adani group teamed with Kargil and American MNCs, to export salt from Gujarat in 1990. After a period, the company left and the collaboration ended, living Adani group with 5000 acres of land, which is today India’s largest multi- product special economic zone. In 1991 the Government revised its rules to stimulate business, which resulted in a boom, in the Adani Group and significant profits.
In 1993, the Gujarat government decided to land private businesses at Mundra port (a sea port in Gujarat). This contract was awarded to Adani Group in 1995. Since 1995, the port has grown significantly, and it now has the capacity to handle almost 8 million tons of cargo per year, making it India’s largest private sector port. Adani predicted that once Port was operational, there would be a need for power. It began importing coal after determining the necessity. This was the start of Adani’s career in the power and energy industry.
Gautam Adani then formed Adani Power Ltd., which has a capacity of 4260 mv and is India’s largest private thermal power firm. According to Forbes 2022, Gautam Adani is the 11th Richest person in the world, with a total asset value of 90 billion dollars and 60,500 employees.
